Wedding vows made easy – a guide to finding the right words for a special moment

Your big day is coming up and there is hardly anything more personal and more moving than the vows you will give each other. You think you cannot do it? Or you do not know what to say?

Let me tell you: you can! And here is how to go about it.

There are a few tips that will help you formulate a modern yet timeless vow that reflects your heart and your relationship.

1. Take time to reflect

Before you put the first words on paper, take time and think about your relationship. How did it all begin? Which special moments, but also which difficult times, have you experienced and come through together? What means the most to you in your partnership?

You can ask yourselves the following questions:

When did you realise that you loved him/her?

How has he/she changed your life?

What would you like to promise for your shared future?

2. Find your voice

A modern wedding vow should sound authentic – like you. Whether humorous, poetic or matter-of-fact, your words should reflect your personality.

Tip:

If you like making jokes, do not shy away from building humour into your vow as well.

Are you more of a romantic? Then feel free to let poetic elements flow in.

3. Structure matters, but not rigidly

Even though wedding vows do not need a fixed structure, a loose outline can help:

1. Introduction: Begin with a short introduction about how you feel or what you particularly value about your partner.

2. The past: Talk about special moments in your relationship that have made you into who you are today.

3. The present: Express your love and gratitude in the here and now.

4. The future: Make promises for your shared future. These can be concrete or general, serious or humorous.

4. Avoid clichés, be specific

Nothing against «for better or for worse», but modern wedding vows clearly benefit from personal detail. Instead of using general phrases, think about the unique qualities your partner has and how these have inspired you.

Example:

Instead of «I promise always to support you», rather say: «I promise always to order pizza with you when you fancy fast food again, and to stand by your side in the big and small things of everyday life.»

5. Watch the length

Your vow should be personal and meaningful, but remember to keep it short. Two to three minutes is perfect. It should be long enough to give expression to your feelings, but not so long that it overstretches the moment.

6. Write it down, but do not read it out

Nobody expects you to recite your vow from memory. But write it down and read it through a few times before the big day. If you need to glance at your notes during the ceremony, that is absolutely fine. It just should not sound as though it is being read aloud.

Tip:

Write it on beautiful paper, on a card or in a small book. It looks so much nicer straight away and you have the text with you just in case.

7. Stay relaxed and authentic

The most important point: be yourselves.

There is nothing wrong with being nervous or shedding a few tears. On the contrary, it gives the whole thing even more expression.

This is your moment and it should be as genuine and emotional as possible.

Traditionally, a wedding vow is, as the name suggests, bound up with a promise. But there are many modern and creative alternatives for shaping this special moment individually. The key is that it is something meaningful for both of you.

Here are a few ideas for not putting the classic «promise» centre stage:

1. A declaration of love

Instead of making concrete promises, you can express your feelings for each other. Say why you love your partner and what this love means to you. A declaration of love is especially beautiful when it is very personal and comes from the heart.

Example:

„For me you are not only my partner but also my best friend. With you I laugh, I dream and I grow. Every day we spend together is a gift to me, and I look forward to every second still ahead of us.“

2. Expressing gratitude

A wedding vow does not always have to look to the future. You can also use the moment to express your gratitude for the journey so far. Say how your partner has enriched your life and what you are grateful to them for.

Example:

„I am grateful for the way you always make me laugh, even when the day has been hard. I value your patience and your ability to make me feel loved and safe. With you at my side I have learned how precious life is.“

3. Telling a story

Sometimes a good story says more than a formal promise. You can tell an anecdote from your shared past that is particularly meaningful to you both. These stories can show what makes your relationship unique without you having to formulate a classic promise.

Example:

„I will never forget the day we got lost on that long hike. Even though we were completely exhausted, you kept making me laugh. Those moments showed me that it does not matter where we are – as long as we are together, we always find the right way.“

4. Capturing feelings in the present, or a vision of your shared future

Sometimes it is about capturing the moment. You can focus your words on what you feel in this special moment, without looking to the future.

But the opposite is wonderfully possible too.

You can just as well describe a vision of your shared future without wrapping it in concrete promises.

Example for the present:

„Right now, in this moment, I feel nothing but love and a deep bond with you. I could not imagine a better place or a better person with whom to experience this day. Here and now, everything is perfect.“

Example for a vision of the future:

„I see us many years from now, sitting together in our little house, watching the sunset and still making each other laugh about the same small things. I look forward to all the adventures still waiting for us.“

Your wedding vow does not have to be rigidly tied to promises. There are many creative and personal alternatives for expressing your feelings and making this special moment into something unique.

Take your time to formulate it carefully, but stay relaxed and authentic – and I promise you it will be a beautiful moment on your big day!
