Your second time

“You know, it’s just not my first time…” says groom Remo and lowers his gaze. We are in the middle of the introductory meeting. He, his fiancée Carla and I, their prospective wedding celebrant.

Remo then tells me that he has been married before. That he has already celebrated a wedding once. It is some years now since that relationship ended. With Carla he is now in the middle of planning a wedding. It seems, however, as though he is ashamed of wanting all of it again, completely anew.

Yes, anyone who chooses marriage hopes that this love will last forever. If that then turns out not to be the case, it is very sad. The end of a marriage is no fun for anyone involved. What once was is now no more. A great hope ends in disappointment.

But anyone who rises back into life out of that disappointment deserves the greatest respect. And if fortune is then even kind enough that a new love arrives, that is wonderful! A sign that a door can always open again.

In my view, anyone who then decides with their whole heart to dare marriage once more is a true romantic. Because the belief in a lifelong love has survived all of it; it pumps fresh and alive through the veins and makes the world shine once again in the brightest of colours. If that is not a reason to celebrate!
